Comment on BC Federationist "AMS Security Workers Fighting for Equality"

Security guards should not be in our unions. They are used by the employer against workers, just as the employers' government uses its police against workers when we resist. These guards should not be in COPE and no security guards should be part of the BCFed.

Message to CUPE 15 re: BCTF strike

I just saw the CUPE 15 update for VSB members (http://www.cupe15.org/bctf-update-vancouver-school-board-members).  It says:

"Normally CUPE members always respect picket lines. However in this situation, where there is no picket line, CUPE members should report to work. K-12 Support staff will not encounter pickets and will go to work at their regular work place and time. CUPE has been assured by BCPSEA that school district employers will not close schools or layoff members during the dispute."

If the BCTF is on strike and withdrawing all services, then working in any struck facility is scabbing, picket lines or not.  Neither the BCTF or CUPE should be encouraging union members to scab on a possible teacher's strike. 

Please correct this right away to ensure that VSB CUPE 15 members are not put in a situation where they are forced to choose between scabbing or facing possible loss of their jobs.  Union representatives should be on site to direct CUPE members not to report to work in the event of a BCTF strike.
